(i) Conservation of forest was the central theme of the Chipko Movement.
(ii) Gaura Devi is known as the mother of Chipko Movement.
(iii) Based on Gandhian principles, the Chipko Movement or Chipko Andolan saw people protesting against deforestation by hugging trees to stop them from being cut. This movement was led by Chandi Prashad Bhatt and Sunderlal Bahuguna. The protest started in the early 1970s when a group of women opposed the cutting down of trees. In this movement, citizen claimed their right to life and right to clean environment.

2.Observe the cartoon given below and answer the question that follow.
(i) What does the above cartoon depicts?
(ii) Explain the meaning of equal membership of citizens.
(iii) From the above picture describe the impact on life of urban people if immigrant workers stop coming into cities.

(i) The above cartoon depicts a day in the life of urban Indian middle class without immigrant workers.
(ii) Equal membership means that all citizens have got equal rights. Nobody is discriminated on the basis of caste. religion, region and gender etc.
(iii) Above picture illustrates that if immigrant workers stop coming to cities, then life of urban people would be influenced drastically. There will be scarcity of workers for cleaning, shops, household works, etc. In that situation, basic services in the cities would be compromised. There will be imbalance of demand and supply of labour force.
