- Bijapur School of Painting
- Golconda School of Painting
- Deccani painting flourished from the late 16th century until the Mughal conquest in the 1680s and continued under the Asafiya dynasty and various provincial courts in Hyderabad.
- Though influenced by Indo-Persian art, Deccani painting developed its unique style under the patronage of regional rulers. Known for its vibrant colors, romantic aura, and dense compositions, this art thrived in the courts of Bijapur, Golconda, and Ahmadnagar, reflecting a distinct regional aesthetic.
Ahmadnagar School of Painting
- The earliest Deccani paintings, found in a volume celebrating Hussain Nizam Shah I’s reign (1553–1565), blend northern Indian and Persian influences.
- Women in these paintings wear modified northern costumes, with elements of southern fashion seen in their scarves. The rich, vibrant colors and Persian-inspired landscapes set them apart.
- Male attire reflects northern styles seen in early Akbari miniatures, with some works showing Bukhara influence. These stylistic elements are evident in Ragamala paintings and manuscripts from the period.
Bijapur School of Painting
- In the sixteenth century, Bijapur created notable works like the Nujum al-Ulum (1570), an encyclopedic manuscript with 876 miniatures showcasing weaponry, utensils, and constellations.
- It reflects the sophisticated style of the Adil Shah court, blending Ottoman Turkish and Indian influences. Key works include a symbolic throne combining Persian and Deccani elements and a detailed painting of a Yogini, emphasizing her spiritual life in a rich landscape.
Golconda School of Painting
- By the late 16th century, Golconda, wealthy from trade and diamonds, gained art fame through Dutch merchants. Early Golconda paintings (1635–1650) were large, detailed wall hangings.
- Notable works include miniatures in the Diwan of Hafiz (1463) and a portrait of Muhammad Qutb Shah (1611–1626), blending Deccani and Mughal styles. A Sufi manuscript features rich illustrations and gold skies.
