CBSE Class 7th English Passage Based Question Chapter 7 Chandni

Paragraph 1:

Once upon a time in Almora, there lived an elderly man known as Abbu Khan, who lived alone in a small hut, surrounded only by a few goats he considered his pets. He gave each of his goats unique names, like Kalua, Moongia, and Gujri, and treated them as though they were his children, taking them out to graze during the day and bringing them back to the hut each night. However, Abbu Khan was unlucky when it came to keeping his goats. Despite his care and love for them, every night, one of the goats would escape, pulling the string from around its neck and disappearing into the hills. He was troubled by this recurring pattern—his goats, despite being well-fed and cherished, preferred to run away, only to be killed by a wolf that roamed the hills. He couldn’t understand why his goats, even with all the freedom and affection he gave them, chose to leave, putting themselves in danger.

  5. What decision did Abbu Khan make after losing all his goats?

Paragraph

Despite his decision, Abbu Khan soon felt the emptiness of loneliness and couldn’t bear to be without his beloved pets. After some time, he bought a young goat, hoping she would stay with him for a long time and never leave for the hills. He named her Chandni, meaning ‘moonlight,’ because she was as white as snow, with two little horns and gleaming red eyes. She was gentle and affectionate, always listening to Abbu Khan’s stories with interest. Over the years, Chandni became the center of Abbu Khan’s world, and he believed that she would never leave him like the others had. He thought she would grow fond of him and the comfortable life he provided, never yearning for the freedom of the hills. But, once again, Abbu Khan’s hopes were shattered, and he was soon to realize that Chandni, too, would not stay by his side forever.

Paragraph 2:

Chandni, the young goat, grew increasingly discontented with her life in Abbu Khan’s compound. Every morning, she gazed longingly at the hills bathed in sunlight, imagining how wonderful it would be to run across the green fields and breathe the fresh air. However, the rope around her neck kept her confined, and she soon began to hate it. She stopped eating the food Abbu Khan provided, grew thin, and lost interest in his stories. Unable to bear her anguish any longer, Chandni spoke to Abbu Khan and asked for permission to go to the hills. Abbu Khan was deeply unhappy, but he tried to persuade her not to leave, warning her about the dangerous wolf that lived in the hills. Despite his warnings, Chandni remained resolute, insisting that she would fight the wolf if necessary. Abbu Khan, frustrated and upset, locked her in a small hut, hoping to keep her safe. Paragraph

Chandni arrived at the hills and felt a sense of freedom and joy she had never known before. She frolicked in the tall grass and flowers, feeling embraced by nature. A herd of wild goats invited her to join them, but Chandni preferred to enjoy her newfound freedom alone. As night fell, the wind stopped, and an eerie silence took over. Chandni heard a strange grunt from the bushes, and soon realized it was the dangerous wolf that Abbu Khan had warned her about. Despite the fear that crept into her heart, she chose to stay and face the wolf, thinking that death in the open field was better than life in the small hut. The wolf emerged from the bushes, and the two creatures sized each other up. Though the wolf was large and fierce, Chandni stood her ground, ready to fight. The battle raged through the night, and by morning, Chandni lay on the ground, badly wounded and covered in blood. The wolf, exhausted and ready to finish her off, prepared to devour her. However, a group of birds observing the fight debated the outcome. While most believed the wolf had won, a wise old bird declared that Chandni was the true winner.
