Thinking About the Poem
I.
1. What kind of place is Innisfree? Think about:
(i) The three things the poet wants to do when he goes back there (stanza I):
The poet wishes to:
- Build a small cabin in the woods.
- Live alone in peace.
- Grow bean-rows and enjoy the simplicity of life.
(ii) What he hears and sees there and its effect on him (stanza II):
At Innisfree, the poet hears the sounds of nature: the buzzing of bees, the songs of linnets, and the gentle lapping of lake water. These sounds evoke feelings of tranquility and contentment, allowing him to connect deeply with nature.
(iii) What he hears in his “heart’s core” even when he is far away from Innisfree (stanza III):
Even when he is away, the poet feels the peace and beauty of Innisfree in his heart. The sounds of nature resonate within him, bringing comfort and a sense of longing for that idyllic place.
2. How does the poet contrast Innisfree with where he now stands? (Read stanza III.)
The poet contrasts Innisfree’s natural beauty and peace with the noisy, chaotic environment he currently inhabits. He feels a deep yearning for the serenity of Innisfree, suggesting that his present surroundings lack the tranquility and fulfillment he associates with the island.
3. Do you think Innisfree is only a place, or a state of mind? Does the poet actually miss the place of his boyhood days?
Innisfree can be seen as both a physical place and a state of mind. It represents an ideal of peace and simplicity that the poet longs for, reflecting a deeper emotional connection. The poet indeed misses Innisfree, as it symbolizes his childhood innocence and a retreat from the complexities of modern life.
II.
1. Look at the words the poet uses to describe what he sees and hears at Innisfree:
(i) Bee-loud glade:
This phrase conjures an image of a vibrant, lively place filled with the sound of buzzing bees, suggesting abundance and life in nature.
(ii) Evenings full of the linnet’s wings:
This evokes a serene evening scene where the fluttering wings of linnets (small birds) create a sense of beauty and peacefulness.
(iii) Lake water lapping with low sounds:
This description paints a tranquil picture of gentle waves lapping against the shore, creating soothing sounds that enhance the calm atmosphere.
2. Analyze the following lines:
“… peace comes dropping slow / Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings.”
These lines suggest a gradual arrival of peace, which flows gently like morning mist. The phrase “dropping from the veils of the morning” implies that peace unfolds quietly with the dawn, enveloping the surroundings. “To where the cricket sings” indicates a return to a natural setting where simple, joyful sounds contribute to the feeling of tranquility.
