What Development Promises – Different Peoples, Different Goals

Different people can have different developmental goals.

What may be development for one may not be development for the other person. It may even be destructive for the other.

Income and Other Goals

  • People seek increased income for improved quality of life, yet true development encompasses more than material wealth.
  • Factors like equality, freedom, security, and respect are equally vital. Developmental goals should encompass a balance of both material and non-material aspects to ensure holistic progress.

National Development

Different persons could have different as well as conflicting notions of a country’s development.

How to Compare Different Countries or States?

  • Income is a key indicator for comparing countries’ development levels. Per capita income, calculated by dividing a country’s total income by its population, is commonly used for this purpose.
  • In the World Development Reports, countries are categorized based on their per capita income. Those with $12,056 or more annually are deemed rich, while those with $955 or less, such as India, are classified as low-income countries.

Income and Other Criteria

Aside from average income, public facilities hold equal significance when considering a nation or region.

Public Facilities

These are the services provided by the government to its citizens. Some of the important public facilities include infrastructure, sanitation, public transport, health care, water, etc.

Sustainability of Development

Sustainable development means meeting present needs without jeopardizing future generations. However, scientists warn that current development practices are unsustainable, citing examples like overuse of groundwater and depletion of natural resources.
