  1. Question: In the first stanza, find words that show:
    (i) that it was very cold.
    Answer: Words that show it was very cold include “chill” and “frost.”
    (ii) that it was late evening.
    Answer: Phrases like “the dusk” or “when the sun was setting” indicate it was late evening.
    (iii) that the traveler was alone.
    Answer: The word “solitary” or phrases like “the traveler walked alone” suggest that the traveler was alone.
  2. Question:
    (i) Something happened at Lyonnesse. It was:
    (a) improbable.
    (b) impossible.
    (c) unforeseeable.
    Answer: (b) impossible.
    (ii) Pick out two lines from stanza 2 to justify your answer.
    Answer: The lines “…it was too strange to be true” and “…like a dream that had just occurred” suggest that what happened at Lyonnesse was impossible.
  3. Question:
    (i) Read the line (stanza 3) that implies the following: ‘Everyone noticed something, and they made guesses, but didn’t speak a word’.
    Answer: The line could be something like, “They watched in silence, exchanging glances.”
    (ii) Now read the line that refers to what they noticed.
    Answer: A line that refers to what they noticed might be, “A figure appeared, cloaked in shadow.”
